Jay McCall, M.Div. earned his Master of Divinity, with a major in Counseling Psychology, from Western Evangelical Seminary (now at George Fox University). He has 2 years post-graduate training in clinical psychology in a Doctor of Psychology program.  Jay received additional post-graduate training in the areas of treating adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, the theory and practice of gestalt therapy, and couples therapy.  Recently, he has completed a certification course through the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC) in the diagnoses and treatment of sexual addiction.  He is a member of the AACC.

Jay has extensive experience in the mental health field especially in the areas of clinical assessment, therapeutic intervention, direct service delivery, and program management and administration.  He was instrumental in developing a comprehensive Christian-based inpatient psychiatric treatment program while managing the counseling staff and coordinating the multi-disciplined treatment team.  He was responsible for overseeing all therapeutic aspects of this intensive treatment program which included initial assessments, coordinating admissions, creating treatment and discharge plans, and coordinating patient after-care with local outpatient providers.  He supervised the counseling staff and developed group treatment programming for daily treatment groups.  He led and/or co-led over 1500 therapy groups during his tenure.  He also provided individual counseling sessions for patients.

Jay was the clinical supervisor for two outpatient counseling agencies where he directed the counseling staffs.  He conducted clinical assessments which included clinical interviewing, administering and interpreting psychological assessment tools (MMPI; WAIS-R; MCMI; FIRO-B; Rorschach; and MBTI).  He provided clinical supervision for graduate students and was approved as a clinical supervisor in psychotherapy for psychiatric residents from OHSU.  Also, Jay served at a community mental health agency as a doctoral practicum student where he provided individual, couples, and family therapy.

While completing his Master’s degree, Jay served as the assistant to the academic dean at Western Evangelical Seminary.  He was also a graduate research assistant and teaching assistant in the counseling department.  He taught courses in Pastoral Counseling and in Group Theory and Practice.  He received a full unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) while working at Emanuel Hospital, Portland, Oregon, as a Resident Chaplain in the hospital’s intensive care units.

Jay ministered in pastoral ministries for over twelve years in various church groups.  He has served in youth ministry, Christian education leadership, and as a senior pastor.  His ministries have consistently focused on building a team leadership approach to ministry.  He believes strongly that the role of a pastor/elder is to help mend the lives of the church members so they can do the work of the ministry.  This mending comes from engaging people into a loving community empowered by the Holy Spirit and guided by the truth of the Word.

Jay’s current counseling practice utilizes his vast experience in counseling and the mental health field, his experience in Christian ministry, and from his own failures.  Jay struggled for years with the bondage of sexual sin and addiction.  Through God’s mercy and grace and through good counsel and accountability, he is now able to help others who struggle in life.  Jay’s counseling work focuses upon men battling with addictions (primarily sexual addiction), men who were abused as boys, and men who suffer from depression and anxiety, and marriages in crisis.  At A New Life Christian Counseling he has created and oversees a Comprehensive Christian Sexual Addiction Treatment Program.  This Christ-centered outpatient treatment program includes individual counseling, group counseling, couples counseling, recovery groups for partners of addicts, a training group for Christian leaders, and intensive workshops.
